Based in Los Angeles, Robert Cha is a Korean-American architect, artist, and author who explores the possibilities of future architecture through generative AI and 3D modeling technologies. Utilizing a range of digital platforms and AI agents—including Midjourney, Gemini, Firefly, Suno, and Kling—his work integrates algorithmic generation, spatial simulation, and the synthesis of sound and image. These processes are grounded in an intimate collaboration between the human designer and machine intelligence.

Encounters with the “sublime” during his service in the U.S. Navy became a crucial source of inspiration that runs throughout his practice. This experience forms the emotional foundation of the vertical and geometric architectural structures he constructs, shaping a distinctive architectural aesthetic in which overwhelming scale, structural rhythm, and machinic precision coexist. At the same time, by designing speculative habitat structures for non-human life forms and robots, he proposes a model of co-evolutionary urban environments that move beyond anthropocentric visions of the city.

Cha holds a Master of Architecture from Princeton University and a Bachelor of Architecture from SCI-Arc. His work has appeared in the 11th Venice Architecture Biennale, and his publications include Spots in Shots (NAi Boekverkopers, 2019) and AI Sapien: Variations on Architecture and the Future (ORO Editions, 2024). He has played key roles in numerous architectural projects—from schematic design to construction administration—including the Caltech CAST project, and has practiced with leading architectural offices such as Eric Owen Moss Architects, as well as Jones, Partners: Architecture, Reiser + Umemoto, and Stan Allen.

Simulacra Museum, 2026

Simulacra Museum is a commissioned work that, for this exhibition, reconfigures the existing vertical architectural image of the Dance Museum—a virtually designed museum—within a horizontal screen frame. The nonlinear and fragmented temporality that has emerged alongside new video formats such as short-form and reels constitutes a central theoretical framework for this exhibition, while also providing a key methodological foundation for the work. Drawing on Jean Baudrillard’s concept of the “simulacra”—a copy without an original that functions as an independent sign produced through simulation—the artist conceives Simulacra Museum as a site that exists solely within virtual space, positioning it as a form of “hyperreality” that is more real than reality itself. According to the artist, this work may be understood as a “postcard” arriving from a future yet to come, as well as a “virtual enclosure” that accommodates the digital works of fourteen artists participating in the Digital Subculture exhibition. Although its origin is entirely virtual, the image appeals sensorially through high-resolution visual bandwidth and emotional density, thereby evoking a tactile sensibility that resonates with reality.

Referencing Alvin Toffler’s concept of “future shock,” this futuristic architectural imagery also functions as a buffer against rapidly shifting technological conditions. By preemptively exposing viewers to a sense of the sublime revealed through machinic cognition, the work seeks to mitigate the dystopian anxieties experienced within a society increasingly intertwined with digital systems. In this sense, it may be understood as a form of “rehearsal” for a reality that has not yet been realized.

Cha anticipates that the future will unfold through an ever more intimate convergence of virtual and physical realities. By presenting a vision of future museum architecture shaped through AI and advanced digital technologies within a public context, this transition is articulated not merely as speculation but as a sensorially perceivable condition. In this way, Simulacra Museum invites reflection on the future emerging at the intersection of architecture, art, and technology within a more inclusive and multilayered network of relations.
