(Charming Computer)
영국(United Kingdom)
Berlin-based Charming Computer is a film studio and artistic practice established in 2022 that explores the intersection of f ilm, technology, and narrative. By combining found objects with digital manipulation techniques, it constructs political, cultural, and speculative narratives, presenting worldviews shaped within technological environments through cinematic language.
Charming Computer integrates generative AI into traditional f ilm production workflows to construct long-form SF narratives, focusing on the realization of a sustained artistic vision. Employing SF not merely as a visual genre but as a critical framework for reflecting on the social conditions and future relations in which humans and machines coexist, the practice examines how contemporary society reconstructs meaning, authority, and belief through technology.
Sonny Sanjay Vadgama, founder of Charming Computer, began his career as a post-production specialist in the UK broadcast and commercial film industry, including at the BBC, before earning a BA in Art and Animation from Central Saint Martins, UK. His work has been presented in major exhibitions, fairs, and projects, including Art Basel Miami (USA, 2017), the University of Cambridge Public Art Commission (UK, 2016), Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain (France, 2011), and the London Science Museum (UK, 2010). His practice has received critical attention from publications such as The Guardian and Monopol, and his works are held in collections including the Zabludowicz Collection. He has received a Digital Innovation Award from Apple and has led campaign art direction for global companies including Hyundai and Meta. Following his residency at Girton College, University of Cambridge (2014), he continues to collaborate as a creative partner with major AI platforms including Kling, Hailuo, Higgsfield, and Dreamina.
Lucian, 2025
Lucian is part of a “speculative SF archive” that presents the process through which fragmented scenes of a world come together to form a vast SF universe. Rather than presenting a definitive conclusion, the work invites viewers to actively participate in the artist’s world-building, deriving new meanings based on their own backgrounds and contexts within an evolving archive of accumulated images, narratives, and artifacts.
The work focuses on the interior psychology of an interstellar vessel’s intelligence facing system instability as well as on the human subject drifting between doubt, responsibility, and foresight as they navigate the crisis. Moving beyond action driven narratives, it follows a rapidly unfolding stream of consciousness, reflecting on the inherent vulnerabilities of complex technological systems and the limits of prediction and autonomy they entail. Simultaneously, it captures the dystopian symptoms latent behind the vision of a mechanical utopia striving for perfection.
On another level, the work provides a multi-dimensional exploration of the memories, emotions, and companionate relationships formed between humans and non-humans by non-linearly intertwining past and present temporalities within a single frame. In particular, by highlighting the intimate bond between the human Nadia and the AI Lucian, it illuminates the evolving memory and loyalty of machines, alongside the ethical weight of irreversible human decision making, while exploring the changing nature of relationships under the posthuman condition. In this way, viewers witness a premonition of a future society amidst the gaps of these speculative fragments, finding a moment of profound contemplation to imagine and anticipate the coming future for themselves.
