Based in North Yorkshire, Edd Carr is a media artist and researcher whose practice expands photographic processes into moving images to visualize trauma, environmental crisis, the Anthropocene, and the entanglements and tensions between humans and ecosystems within the context of capitalism.

Having grown up in rural North Yorkshire, he has held a deep interest in documenting and preserving the natural world from an early age, influenced by his grandmother, who studied entomology. His work constructs a “material-centered” aesthetic by combining analogue techniques—such as plant developed 35mm film, cyanotype animation, soil prints, and hand-crafted emulsions—with digital layering, through which actual elements of nature become part of the film emulsion itself. In particular, by integrating organic materials such as soil, rainwater, and charcoal into the animation process, he transforms the image-making process itself into an ecological practice.

Since earning his MA in Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art in United Kingdom, his work has been presented at major international institutions including the Saatchi Gallery (UK, 2025; 2024), Somerset House (UK, 2025), the ICA London as part of the BFI London Film Festival (UK, 2024), Rencontres d’Arles (France, 2025), Design Miami (USA, 2024), London Art Fair – Photo50 (UK, 2024), TOKAS Hongo (Japan, 2024), and Leeds Art Gallery (UK, 2023). Additionally, he has received the Film London’s Best Artist Filmmaker Award (2025), the Channel 4 Random Acts Award (UK, 2017), and the Wild Film Festival Innovation Award (2017). He is currently a Film London FLAMIN Fellow and serves as Co-Director of “The Sustainable Darkroom,” the world’s f irst organisation dedicated to the research, development, and advocacy of environmentally sustainable alternatives to analogue and digital photography.

Lepidoptera, 2025

Lepidoptera is an experimental video that intersects two narratives: the artist’s childhood trauma and the extinction of butterflies. The title, Lepidoptera, refers to the biological classification of insects that includes both butterflies and moths. This work weaves together the life cycle of a butterfly, archival footage of the artist’s childhood, and the ecological and climate crisis within the medium of hand-printed animation.

The opening line of the video, “I was born of the butterfly,” reveals the artist’s identification with the insect. While phrases such as “Pesticide Use,” “Carbon Emissions,” and “Ecosystem Collapse” evoke ecological threats, lines such as “My son, don’t cry,” “Fall,” and “I should never have had you” suggest personal and domestic wounds. These heterogeneous languages collide and intersect throughout the video, functioning as a metaphorical structure that seeks the possibility of healing through mutual understanding and communion.

In the production process, the artist hand-printed approximately 2,600 images using various analogue photographic processes. Fragments of his home landscape and private memories appear on screen, revealing the incompleteness and distortion of memory. These are reconfigured into a distinctive texture through their combination with the unpredictable fluctuations and physical imperfections inherent in analogue techniques.

The work incorporates natural elements connected to the artist’s life, including handmade charcoal from ancient oak woodland, leaf and bark transfer images, iron-rich soil collected from a disused mine, rainwater poured directly onto the frames, and pigments made from foraged weeds. In addition, the use of multiple animation techniques—such as cyanotype, ecocyano, cyanolumen, and anthocyan— forms a kaleidoscopic homage to butterflies. The soundtrack, composed of layered piano textures and electronic sounds, aurally evokes the materiality of different printing techniques, creating an immersive experience that resonates with the visual layers.
