(David Szauder)
(Hungary)
Residing in Berlin, David Szauder is a media artist, educator, and curator who works at the intersection of conceptual art, AI, and visual art, exploring themes of authorship, perception, and machine subjectivity. By blending glitch aesthetics, generative systems, and speculative narratives, he constructs a unique form that is both visually striking and conceptually rigorous. The core thread running throughout his artistic practice lies in the art historical insights and theoretical foundations inspired by the masters of twentieth-century modernism and surrealism. Traditional images and historical symbols— reinterpreted through AI—are reborn as a new vision of storytelling through his conceptual lens.
Since majoring in Art History at Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary, he has developed an academic foundation that bridges art and technology through further studies in Computer Science at Gábor Dénes College and Intermedia at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. His work has been presented at internationally renowned institutions and festivals including Centre Pompidou (France), Ars Electronica (Austria), Momentum Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien (Germany), and the Ludwig Museum (Hungary). From 2009 to 2014, he served as curator at the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Berlin (.CHB). Currently based between Berlin and Budapest, he is also active as an educator, leading interactive media art courses and workshops.
Protection, 2026
Skin is a surface that protects the body, while also functioning as a sensitive, permeable, and living interface. The work begins from the artist’s inquiry into how skin—having maintained continuity through regeneration, shedding, and healing—has come to be perceived as an increasingly insufficient natural defense under the intensified conditions of the present.
The work explores the notion of “exposure” surrounding the skin through a media-based language. This extends beyond physical dimensions such as ultraviolet radiation to social, psychological, and structural forces that exert pressure on the individual. These forces accumulate like a kind of ambient “radiation,” leading not only individual bodies but also the collective toward states of fatigue and exhaustion. The work constructs an “adaptive entity” that reorganizes itself in search of protection amid such external threats. Mediated by rhythmically transforming fabric, this form traverses multiple layers of skin, repeatedly folding inward and outward while continuously testing the limits of its boundaries and resilience.
In Protection, the artist constructs a visual language based on “found material” by combining an archival photograph of a wrapped figure with images of demolished buildings. From this, a hybrid structure—both “body” and “ruin”—emerges, within which the boundaries between protection and collapse, and concealment and exposure, remain in a continuous state of instability and negotiation.
Let's dance, 2025
The work is grounded in the artist’s personal background, marked by an enduring sense of inadequacy despite a deep affinity for dance. The dissonance on screen—a lack of rhythmic sensibility, a body that resists coordination, and legs that refuse to follow intention—becomes both a source of repeated failure and frustration and a driving force that generates productive tension.
Functioning as a form of self-therapy, the video unfolds through fragments of a body immersed in rhythm, particularly “constantly moving legs.” Through this bodily depiction, the work constructs an imagined world in which continuous dancing and compulsive movement are demanded. Within this stage, the artist confronts his limitations while simultaneously attempting to transcend them, projecting a desire for effortless movement onto an ongoing choreography.
In this way, the work does not merely represent or document dance. Instead, it constructs a psychological landscape in which longing, failure, and repetition intersect. At its center lies the body, which—though resistant—continues to function as a “site of negotiation.”
Halloweened, 2025
The work is rooted in the artist’s perception of Halloween. Having grown up in a context where even Thanksgiving was absent, Halloween—encountered only through cinema— remains an uncanny and culturally dislocated phenomenon. As an imported ritual, it is perceived with a sense of distance and artificiality.
This sensibility, however, shifts through the artist’s direct experience of Halloween in New York City. There, Halloween unfolds as a large-scale immersive performance in which bodies, costumes, and collective enactments converge, transforming what was once an abstract concept into a vivid lived experience. Yet, even so, for the artist as both observer and outsider, Halloween never becomes fully familiar.
Based on this strange and dissonant experience in New York, the work translates Halloween as a surreal ritual into the artist’s own surreal world. Within this space, participation and observation coexist in tension, and a new cultural experience is reconfigured through processes of displacement, projection, and transformation, ultimately taking the form of Halloweened.
