(Singapore)

@niceaunties

niceaunties is an artist, designer and public speaker whose practice centers on reimagining and expanding the cultural figure of the “auntie.” Through speculative storytelling, she positions aging women—who have long been marginalized by the social gaze—at the center of everyday life, exploring universal themes such as food, beauty, care, and environmental awareness in diverse aspects through generative AI, digital art, and mixed media. Influenced by surrealism, fantasy, kawaii culture, and her architectural background, her work champions female empowerment, self expression, and the solidarity of social community.

niceaunties’ Auntieverse project was presented at a TED Talk in Vancouver in 2024 and has since been showcased globally, including at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Denmark, 2024), the V&A Digital Art Weekend (UK, 2024), and the AI Action Summit at the Grand Palais (France, 2025). She has collaborated with international brands such as Swatch and L’Oréal, bridging speculative art with commercial and cultural platforms. In 2024, she presented her collection Along the River in Auntieverse at the Christie’s Art + Tech Conference in New York and was commissioned by the City of West Hollywood to create Aunties on Sunset, a public billboard installation along Sunset Boulevard from June to September 2024. Her work has garnered international acclaim, featured in The Straits Times, Forbes, and The Guardian.

Jellybay And Why You Don’t See Giant Aunties On Land, 2026

The narrative of this work unfolds based on the impressions gathered by the artist during her journey to Ha Long Bay, Vietnam—capturing numerous boats, daily sunsets, and the surrounding landscape through her sketches. In the scene, while an auntie who stepped onto land from the water shrank in size and eventually disappeared, the others chose to remain in the water to construct their own playful and abundant world. The extraordinary limestone formations rising from the sea serve as the foundation for a surreal reimagining, transforming into the silhouettes of giant aunties balanced in various yoga poses.This scene of yoga performance closely resonates with the symbolism of healing through which Ha Long Bay has long been recognized as a site of rest and restoration.

Situated as an extension of the artist’s ongoing Auntieverse project and JellyCity research, this work focuses particularly on the logic of buoyancy, soft translucent forms, and an organic sense of sculptural beauty. The flexible and fluid sensitivity of JellyCity now expands into the natural realm of the “bay,” where the sea where the monumentally expanded bodies of aunties merge and fuse with the contours of the rocks and the horizon. Through this transcendent space, the artist proposes an independent venue where aunties—characterized by their courage to take risks, exceptional adaptability, and free self expression—traverse their imaginative world.

<19:19>, 2025

19:19, 2025

The phrase “Have you eaten?”—which appears as an auntie’s greeting over the telephone—is called “Jia ba buey?” in Hokkien, and is a typical expression used in the artist’s maternal family when calling relatives or friends. Based on the artist’s memories, 19:19 is a work which addresses the everyday yet widely shared culture of the family community in Asian society. The depiction of the busy hand movements filling the kitchen, the chatter of women, rising steam, and the diverse aromas of dishes that would permeate the house during the “Golden Hour” each evening evokes a sense of childhood longing and nostalgia.

19:19 imagines scenes from the everyday lives of aunties living in JellyCity: asking after one another’s well-being, stretching, and preparing a variety of dishes using jelly ingredients. Such imagery moves beyond the stereotypes and socially assigned roles imposed upon aunties, proposing instead a more positive and affectionate reconfiguration of these figures.
