(Parted by Light)> (2026)

Parted by Light operates between personal memory and collective trauma, exploring how contemporary myths are formed through mediated experience. The work reflects on the September 11 attacks as an event encountered through televised repetition, where images of collapse and distress become embedded in global consciousness beyond direct experience. In this context, the piece considers how identity and perception are shaped through circulating images, recalling the fragmented and destabilized subjectivity evoked in Detribalised of Tam bin Che Lat (1983) by Ismail Zain.
The work interweaves MRI scans of the artist’s own face with broadcast imagery, presenting trauma as a recursive and distorted visual form. In contrast, the remembered space of a grandparent’s house—absent from media yet sustained through sensory memory—emerges as a grounding point where personal memory meets global myth. Through looping animation, repetition, and glitch effects, the work suggests that memory unfolds cyclically, with light acting both as a dividing force and a means of locating the self within overlapping layers of experience.
