(A Crack in the Water Followed by Return)> (2021)
A Crack in the Water Followed by Return (2021)
Single-channel video / Color / Sound, 1 min 59 sec
A Crack in the Water Followed by Return brings together images of refuge, rupture, and return through a tightly layered visual sequence. The bathtub—appearing as both a site of emergency shelter and a symbol of cleansing—anchors the work’s dual association with vulnerability and healing. In moments of imminent danger, it recalls a space where bodies gathered for protection; at the same time, it evokes ritual practices of washing and renewal. Through this convergence, the video frames the body as a collective site that carries intergenerational trauma while also holding the potential for restoration.
The film incorporates and reverses archival footage of the ongoing Nakba, superimposing these images onto the surface of a cracking dam. This gesture transforms the visual field into a space of tension and release, where accumulated pressure gives way to the possibility of return. Echoing the words of Noura Erakat—“Keep pushing, we’re breaking through the dam”—the work positions the crack as both rupture and threshold. As water begins to flow, it becomes a metaphor for collective movement and renewal, suggesting a process through which bodies, land, and memory might be reconnected and sustained.
(She Still Wears Kohl and Smells Like Roses)> (2023)
She Still Wears Kohl and Smells Like Roses (2023)
Single-channel video / Color / Sound, 15 min 36 sec
She Still Wears Kohl and Smells like Roses re-narrates a collection of ancient glass vessels excavated in Palestine and Syria, shifting the focus from museological display to the layered histories embedded in their making, circulation, and extraction. Moving between archival reference and speculative reconstruction, the video interweaves the history of glass with personal and embodied narratives, foregrounding how such objects are not neutral artifacts but carriers of memory, scent, and ritual. Through this lens, the work draws attention to the intimate associations of glass—perfume bottles, cosmetic containers, and ceremonial vessels—while situating them within broader histories of displacement and material transformation.
At the same time, the video critically engages the conditions under which these objects enter institutional collections. By incorporating replicas produced in Palestine—crafted by local artisans and forgers—the work exposes the violence of archaeological extraction and the systems that legitimize certain objects as “original.” The film’s narrative evokes absent bodies and disrupted landscapes, where the natural resources once used in glassmaking now exist in degraded form. In doing so, the work repositions the vessels beyond static display, framing them instead as active agents within ongoing histories of labor, circulation, and contested cultural memory.
(Always a Waiting Market)> (2023)
Always a Waiting Market (2023)
Single-channel video / Color / Sound, 4 min 41 sec
Collaboration with Dr. Jasbir Puar
Always A Waiting Market is a surrealist montage about humanitarian aid foods and their leakage into besieged and occupied territories. The irony of the West feeding those it simultaneously bombs is juxtaposed here through a moving image experiment using archival videos from the American horror film The Birds and found footage from American canned food commercials— Chicken of the Sea tuna fish and the nutrition drink Sego— used to feed Palestinian refugees in 1967.
