1960년대 가상의 SF 영화 클립 형식으로 제작된 이 작품은 화성 이민국에서 벌어지는 인종차별의 이야기를 다룬다. 중산층 가정에서 태어나 자란 장남은 1세대 이민자로서 홀로 화성으로 이주하게 된다. 그는 거주 비자 연장을 신청하는 과정에서 이민국 직원의 권력 남용의 대상이 된다.

2020년은 기억되어야 할 해이다. COVID-19의 영향 아래 우리는 자신과 세계의 관계를 다시 사유하게 되었을 뿐만 아니라, 다시 한번 우주를 바라보게 되었다. SpaceX가 잇따라 로켓을 발사하면서, 가까운 미래에 화성에서 살아가는 일은 점차 현실적인 희망처럼 보이기 시작했다.

그러나 화성에 대한 우리의 야망은 수세기 전 아메리카 대륙에서 이루어졌던 식민화와 다르지 않은 현대적 식민주의로 이어질 수도 있다. 냉전 시대의 우주 경쟁(Space Race)처럼 인간은 늘 미지의 먼 세계에 희망을 투사해왔다. 마치 도달할 수 없는 희망에 기대어 현재의 고통을 잠시 잊을 수 있는 것처럼 말이다. 이는 역사적·현대적 이주의 과정에서도 마찬가지이다. 그것은 개인이 다른 도시로 이동하는 작은 변화일 수도 있고, 단지 새로운 집으로 이사하는 일일 수도 있다. 우리는 다시 시작할 기회가 주어진다면, 잠시 동안 개미처럼 살아가는 삶조차 견뎌낼 수 있을 것처럼 행동한다.

Created as a clip from a fictitious sci-fi movie from the 1960s, this film tells a story of racism at the Mars Immigration Office. It is about the oldest son, born and raised in a middle-class family, moving to Mars alone as a first-generation immigrant. When applying to extend his resident visa, he becomes the subject of the Immigration Officer’s abuse of power.

2020 is a year to be remembered. Under the influence of COVID-19, not only do we get to rethink the relationship between ourselves and the world, but we also turn our eyes to the universe once again. With one rocket after another launched by SpaceX, living on Mars in the near future seems hopeful.

Even so, our ambition for Mars may turn out to be a modern form of colonization no different from what happened centuries ago in the Americas. Like the Space Race during the Cold War, humans are inclined to place hope in the unknown and the faraway—as if we could forget our pain by holding on to unattainable hopes. The same goes for every migration throughout history and in modern times. It can be as small as an individual moving to a different city or even just a new house—as if we could put up with living like ants for the time being when given a chance to start all over again.
