양디, <의지의 힘>, 2023

<의지의 힘>은 베이징 798CUBE 미술관의 의뢰로 제작된 비디오 설치 작품으로, 은허 유적지와 갑골문에서 영감을 받았다. 이 작품은 작가의 직관과 동시대 인식론에 대한 성찰에서 출발한다.

은허 유적지에서 현장 조사를 진행한 이후, 작가는 갑골문을 연구하였다. 고고학적 발견에 따르면 이러한 점술은 거북 등껍질 위에 생긴 균열을 통해 미래를 예측하는 우주론적 행위였을 뿐만 아니라, 점술의 실현 여부를 확인하기 위해 등껍질에 새겨진 “검증문(验辞, Verification Inscriptions)” 또한 포함하고 있었다. 이러한 검증문의 존재는 갑골문에 우주론적 차원과 기록적 기능을 동시에 부여하며, 갑골문을 초기 형태의 기록 문서로 자리매김하게 했다.

이러한 점술 관습은 상나라 시대부터 오늘날까지 이어져 내려오며, 거북 등껍질 안에서 세 개의 동전을 흔들어 운명을 점치는 의식으로 발전해왔다. 작가는 이 의례적 형식을 변형하여, 거북 등껍질을 고대 유적으로 이어지는 동굴이자 우주를 떠도는 우주선과 같은 하이브리드적 존재로 재구성한다.

이 “거북 등껍질 동굴” 안에는 세 개의 동전이 놓여 있다. 첫 번째 동전에는 알브레히트 뒤러(Albrecht Dürer)의 <기도하는 손>을 인공지능이 재해석한 이미지가 새겨져 있다. 여섯 개의 손가락으로 표현된 이 이미지는 초기 이미지 생성 모델이 인체 해부학을 정확하게 처리하지 못하며 발생시킨 대표적인 오류를 보여준다. 두 번째 동전에는 은허에서 발견된 청동기 내부에서 촬영된 인간의 치아 이미지가 새겨져 있다. 역사 기록에 따르면 상나라에서는 살아 있는 포로를 삶아 제물로 바치는 희생 의식이 존재했다. 인간 신체 가운데 가장 부패에 강한 부분인 치아는 다른 어떤 기관보다 오랜 시간 동안 보존된다. 두 동전에는 모두 “내가 진정 이것을 소유하고 있는가?”라는 문구가 새겨져 있다. 하지만 세 번째 동전은 비물질적이다. 마치 영화 속 부유하는 시점처럼, 관람자의 무중력적이고 주관적인 시선이 바로 이 세 번째 동전으로 설정된다. 관람자는 설치 작품 속에서 마치 “껍질 안에서 회전하는 동전”이 된 듯한 감각을 경험하며, 과거와 현재를 가로지르는 점술 행위와 신비로운 힘에 참여하게 된다.

고대의 갑골문이 인간 사고의 가장 초기 결정체를 보여주듯, 언어는 인간이 지식을 구조화하고 세계를 인식하는 방식을 반영한다. 오늘날 인공지능 언어 모델이 널리 확산되는 상황 속에서, 중요한 질문은 인간의 두뇌와 인공지능의 미래 관계를 어떻게 이해하고 사유할 것인가에 놓여 있다. 작가는 이미지의 연상과 시점의 선택을 통해, 오직 인간의 정신만이 만들어낼 수 있는 기억·경험·의미 사이의 특수한 연결성을 강조한다.

Yang Di, Force of Will, 2023

Force of Will is a video installation commissioned by 798CUBE Art Museum, drawing on the archaeological site of Yinxu (Ruins of Yin) and Jiaguwen (oracle bone script). The work emerges from the artist’s intuition and a reflection on contemporary “epistemology.”

Following field research at Yinxu, the artist studied the oracle bone divination inscriptions. Archaeological findings reveal that these divinations involved not only cosmological predictions of the future—manifested in the cracks formed on the turtle shell, symbolizing heaven and earth—but also “Verification Inscriptions” (Yanci 验辞): texts carved onto the shell to confirm whether the divination had been fulfilled. The presence of these verification inscriptions endowed the oracle bones with both a cosmological dimension and a documentary function, positioning them as an early form of archival writing.

This divinatory practice has been transmitted from the Shang Dynasty to the present day, evolving into a ritual in which fate is predicted by shaking three coins inside a turtle shell. The artist transforms this ritualistic form by reimagining the turtle shell as a hybrid entity: at once a cave leading into ancient ruins and a spacecraft drifting in the cosmos.

Inside this “turtle shell cave,” the artist has placed three coins. The first coin bears an AI-generated reinterpretation of Albrecht Dürer’s Praying Hands, rendered with six fingers—a classic error from early image-generation models, which struggled to process human anatomy accurately. The second coin features human teeth photographed at Yinxu, discovered inside a bronze vessel. Historical records indicate that the Shang Dynasty practiced the boiling of living captives as sacrificial rites. Teeth, being the most decomposition-resistant part of the human body, endure time more than any other organ. Both coins are engraved with the question, “Do I really own it?” The third coin, however, is intangible. The viewer’s weightless, subjective perspective—akin to a floating cinematic POV shot—is conceived as this third coin. Through the installation, viewers experience the sensation of becoming a “coin spinning inside the shell,” participating in an act of divination and the mysterious forces that span past and present.

Just as these ancient inscriptions represent the earliest crystallization of human thought, language itself reflects the way humans structure knowledge and perceive the world. With the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence language models, a central question today concerns how we might navigate the future relationship between the human brain and artificial intelligence. Through the association of images and the selection of perspective, the artist foregrounds the specific connectivity of memory, experience, and meaning that can only be produced by the human mind.
