Che Jianquan, Pavilion, 2003-2022

Pavilion is Che Jianquan’s long-term project that has continued for over a decade. Developed through a working method distinct from his previous artistic practice, the series repeatedly and deeply explores an identical motif. Since the debut of the first Pavilion work in 2007, the artist has produced ten video works for this project, whose creative premise is grounded in long-term observation and recording across different times and seasons.

By seeing the same pavilion in such a cross-temporal manner, Che seeks to eradicate an individually inherent view of the world—namely jñeyāvaraa (“the obstruction of what remains to be known”) in Zen Buddhism. This concept refers to self-existence-based thinking and judgment that hinder one’s perception of the infinity of the world.

Through this selective revelation, Che attempts to contain the endlessly changing world within the lens. Although such selectivity may itself function as another form of obstruction, this selective revelation through an undifferentiated gaze reduces authorial intervention and becomes Che Jianquan’s working method, appearing to do nothing but observe in an attempt to move beyond jñeyāvaraa.

As a result, the images in Pavilion become multiple sections within the process through which the world reveals itself. Through repeated presentation and sustained observation, objects and motifs under frequent inspection gradually reveal the world’s original form. If this original form can also be understood as a kind of generalizable tendency or style, it ultimately points toward the world’s multifaceted extension—invalidating habitual experiences and fixed concepts.
