Ana Iti, A dry and windswept body (2025)

Single-channel video / Color / Sound, 5 min 5 sec

A dry and windswept body departs from I am a salt lake, returning to Kāpara- Te-Hau during the salt harvest. The video is composed from drone footage that moves above the lake, revealing its contours alongside the industrial processes operating on the site. As the drone scans the landscape, an accompanying audio track experiments with the textures and rhythms of breath, drawing a connection between the ruffled surface of the water and a soundscape structured by breathing.

Ana Iti, I am a salt lake (2023)

Single-channel video / Color / Sound, 12 min 35 sec

Ana Iti’s film brings together footage from Kāpara-Te-Hau (the salt lakes in Te Tau Ihu), abstracted diagrams drawn on glass, and a first person text. These three elements recur, something like the pattern-based process of learning where you  repeat a sentence or bar of music until it is embodied, becomes part of you. I am a salt lake also registers the difficulty of finding language sufficient to articulate the relationship with the different whenua, seas, lakes, winds, houses, that the artist passes through.
