Skinfolk, Kinfolk began as a melancholic meditation — a meandering through my mother's linear years, conversing with her private histories through the inanimate. Pieced together through memory and fragmentation, the work inhabits a kind of third space: visiting places that were distant, filling in the gulf of stories never told while growing up. It grapples with inherited identities, symbolic familial connections, and the quiet weight of what is passed down without words.

In 2025, the project deepens. For the first time, it is brought directly to my mother — becoming a collaborative reflection. Together, we revisit her life story and the evolving meaning of our relationship across the years. What was once a solitary act of piecing together becomes shared and intimate, with both of us as active participants.

Drawing from The Circle of Security, the work underscores the profound importance of attachment to our caregivers and the lasting imprint of those early connections. It also holds the paradox of state policies that — though designed to support the family — have quietly strained its bonds, shifting the delicate dynamics of the domestic sphere and altering the ways we come to know one another.
