(Waiting to hear from you)> (2022)

Shun Ikezoe, Waiting to hear from you(を待つ) (2022)

Single-channel video / Color / Sound,  8mm film / digital, 19 min (Originally created in 2022 as a three-channel video installation; re-created as a single version in 2026)

Waiting to hear from you traces a return to the artist’s birthplace in Kagawa, where personal memory unfolds through ritual, landscape, and mediated encounter. The work follows a journey that includes the Shodoshima 88 temple pilgrimage and culminates in a hospital visit, where, due to pandemic restrictions, communication takes place through a tablet screen. The encounter—marked by distance, silence, and the faint possibility of response—reflects a condition in which presence is mediated and intimacy is sustained through technological interfaces, shaped by prolonged separation and the absence of speech.

Set against this personal narrative, the work reflects on a broader social context in which voices remain unheard. Recalling a case of long-term domestic confinement, it alludes to the historical system of private confinement in Japan, where individuals with mental illness were isolated within the home under legal sanction. Within a society that continues to place responsibility for such conditions on the family, the work considers how both individuals and their families are often rendered invisible, their voices rarely reaching the outside. Through this juxtaposition, the work becomes an act of address: a gesture of speaking that is followed by waiting—holding space for a response that may or may not arrive.

Shun Ikezoe, Eustoma(きっとうまく話せない) (2021)

Single-channel video / Color / Sound, 13 min (Originally created in 2021 as a three-channel video installation; re-created as a single version in 2026)

Eustoma that reflects on absence, memory, and the fragile persistence of voice. The work centers on a relationship marked by silence, where a once-familiar presence is now encountered only through recollection and recorded fragments. As communication becomes impossible, memory begins to blur; the voice of the other fades in lived experience while remaining preserved in home video, creating a disjunction between past intimacy and present distance. Within this space, the work contemplates dreams as a site where memory is reproduced, raising the question of what remains accessible when the waking world recedes.

Set against the temporal rupture of hospitalization and the pandemic, the work unfolds as a belated address—an attempt to speak despite uncertainty of response. The gesture of seeking out light purple eustoma flowers, tied to a shared memory of a place once imagined together, becomes a quiet act of connection across absence. Moving between longing and restraint, the work holds a dual desire: to call the other back into wakefulness, and at the same time to allow them the peace of remaining within their dream.
