The Children’s Gallery has organized special exhibitions to tap onto artistic sensibility of children and open up the horizons of their imagination through diversely themed contemporary art. This time in 2022, we present ANGULAR CIRCLE, a solo exhibition of artist Kim Yongkwan. Kim’s oeuvre manifests how science and mathematical thinking is applied to art as he has been active in various domains including flat and three-dimensional work, installation and design. He pays attention to elements reminiscent of geometry or programming such as modules, patterns, tessellations, puzzles, and blocks. He examines the meaning and relationship of what is found in the process of disassembling and rearranging the completed structure or randomly stacking and reconstructing small blocks of randomized units.
Showcased are his exhibits for which he cut and pasted the completed figure based on the researches of mathematicians, and showed the process of transforming it into a shape close to a circle. An angular circle literally means a shape close to a circle, not a perfect circle. From his point of view, an angular shape and a circle respectively symbolizes the reality and an ideal world. In other words, the process where a split polygon changes into something else being close to a circle is a journey of creating an ideal world in which diverse aspects of people are understood and respected. The numerous possibilities and beauty revealed in this process are countless aspects of us, human beings, that have built up relationships with the society. We hope that it will be an exhibition where the audience can think not only about the physical relationship of figures or shapes by fostering a sense of space and figurative expression but also contemplate on abstract values found in the relationship between themselves and others and various aspects of the society.
Kim Yongkwan(1980-) has produced artworks where values are horizontally rearranged by questioning justifiable norms in the world. His interest lies in the time and space, images, and stories built by certain assumptions, settings, and rules, and builds a new view of the world through various thought experiments with his own intuition and logic. He majored in printmaking at Hongik University, and took in part in residency studio programs in Gyeonggi Creation Center, Nanji Residency Open Studio and Goyang Art Studio. He has showcased figuratively aesthetic and balanced artworks ranging from his first work of SYLLABRICK in 2007 to Qubict-Parallex Viewport, Obsolete Landscape, PUTTO, Symmetric Matrix, Asymmetric Matrix, Ruins of Mimesis, Mimesis of Ruins, New Wave, and Round Square, and has been under a fascinating spotlight at home and abroad. He has held four solo exhibitions including the 2010 show, and showcased his works in major art museums in Korea including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Suwon Ipark Museum of Art, Pohang Museum of Steel Art, and ClayArch Gimhae Museum.
