Space Lee Ufan settles in Busan
Space of work that Lee Ufan devoted
from construction design to exhibition work
It took 100 years to get back ‘Kamp Hialeah’ from the US forces in Korea to the city of Busan. Now, Busan Citizens Park is in its place. City Busan pushed ahead to build an art gallery of Lee Ufan, World Master of arts in Busan Citizens Park for creating the park with a good balance of history and culture.
Lee Ufan rejected the suggestion several times, but he finally accepted to build an art gallery from continuous offers and the relations with Busan that he spent his middle school years. He donated 20 pieces of his work to Busan city and concluded an agreement with Busan city to build ‘Space Lee Ufan’ in July 2013.
He posed his gallery as a folding screen of overpass next to the Museum of Art instead of Busan Citizens Park that Busan city pushed ahead.
He visited the site three times during the construction period and he put his boundless enthusiasm into the gallery including building height and space structure as well as finishing materials, light, and furnishings. He also was involved in detailed design and delicate installation of each art work.
‘Space Lee Ufan’ was opened on April 10, 2015. It took 5 years to hold the passion of the master and to meet the expectation of Busan citizens. ‘Space Lee Ufan’ is his second art gallery followed by Naoshima ‘Lee Ufan Art Gallery’ (opened in 2010) Total project cost 47.2 hundred million KRW (gov. expense 18 hundred million KRW, city expense 29.2 hundred million KRW), Total area is 1,400.83㎡(2 stories above ground and one underground level) scale and showrooms are 1st and 2nd floors.
