Metropolis of Desire. - Visible and invisible.

Intentions
The modern metropolis, in other words, the totality of 21st technology and material,has become the major space of the life for the human and is composed of the relationships of complicated lives of numerous people. There as on for recalling the keyword‘desire’ in the modern urban space is because it is connected with the ‘space dominant for capitalism.’ Therefore, the metropolis could be rampant ‘place for desire’ where the fierce competition of various interested parties that are wanting to preoccupy the capital and the dominated area. The urban development has given comfort and the rich life, but on the other hand, lots of urban matters are generated from the other side of this. According to the theory of Jacques Lacan, the source that leads the human life is ‘desire,’ and something that leads the urban change, which is the results of the human behavior, also becomes the desire. However, this type of desire is ‘desire of the other’ intrinsically and is the object that never be fulfilled. Absolutely ‘insatiable desire’ keeps making to feel the infinite deficiency. Being caught in the desire of the capital, the metropolis creates the illusion in order to fulfill that. The fancifully decorated urban place and its image exist as the object to be shown. Therefore, the urban people considering the city as their life space experience alienation and deficiency within the hallucination of the city. The urban people are the main subject of the city, however, they cannot be revealed their existence externally because they might lose their true life space. These kinds of matters on losing identity exert the strong influence on the method of human life and the change of the recognition; therefore, it gets expressed as numerous problematic phenomenon of the city. is divided into three themes. First, ‘The Metropolis of Hallucination,’ which is about the urban scape developing into the spectacle image. Second, ‘Behind the Metropolis,’ that reveals the urban related matters that conceal and exist simultaneously behind the city that holds the hallucination of desire. And lastly, ‘People from the Bottom’ features the worries of the artist as the resident of the city and pursues the artistic communication with local residents. In order to stereoscopically show numerous sides that the current city has, the works that are deeply exploring on ‘here, at this point’ or ‘the city, Busan’ among the other cities are going to be mainly displayed. Now let’s pause enjoying the fancy hallucination of the city for awhile, and grasp the structure of urban desire and the origin of its matter; besides, we should introspect about the recovery of the urban identity. This exhibition wishes to provide the possibilities of seeking for the human who recognizes the city in new ways could become the main subject for the urban space or the owner of desire.

- The Metropolis of Hallucination-


The modern city exists as ‘the reality’ and the enormous ‘hallucination.’ The urban image that is reorganized to conceal the quality of the urban life and the fancy city view has now become the representative of the modern urban civilization and the symbolic capital. Moreover, it is the desirable object of the modern people who are willing to lead the bountiful life. The urban space that gets focused with the consumption activity in the society of post capitalism creates a kind of symbolic spectacle (the fancy city view) and earns the identity of the differentiated space according to the consumer competency; in other words, this is the enforced difference or the hierarchy of the space, and becomes the standards for distinction. The spectacle cityscape causes the competitive between cities within the situation of the era of globalization therefore the desire that wants to be predominated results in another successful urban image.


-Behind the Metropolis-


The city Busan contains the time and space of rapid speed such as alienation that compressed modernization caused and imbalance, formation of the monopolist, development of shipbuilding industry. Most of these scenes occur not only in Busan but as happens the common phenomenon in big cities in Korea. When closely looking into the process of urban creation and expansion, the redevelopment defines as the destruction of the space and entails the predatory of the space while endlessly forces and alienates people out on the street. Overall, the desire of urbanization that carries speed match gets restored into the signifier of ‘capital’ and ‘development’ and constantly produces and conceals the dark side of the city such as implicitly accelerating the urban capitalization and excluding its characteristics. Numerous matters which satisfies desire such as development mechanism trapped in the paradigm of construction state, the laborers as the sacrifices of modernized industrial civilization, inequality, building dangerous facilities without preparation and examination and defenseless system for the disaster are existing under the image of the illusionistic city.

The class that does not have consumption activity is in the alienated state and gets forced to be concealed behind the hallucination of the city. Besides, in the process of uniformity of urban scene, reckless development and construction eliminate the old life stories of residents and local value; therefore, it has created the abstract space that the urban space and the human itself are separated. People who are alienated or forced out on the street in the metropolis where the desire operates. The question is still valid on what is necessary while living the life as for the people who have lost their subjectivity and become the other. The recovery of forced placeness and the memory of community might be above the valuable urban spirit than as they seem. Artists are putting the best efforts in order to correct the loss of bonding while leading the new urban theory in different ways. Artists as the part of the urban people try to overcome the urban matter in the reality with the people. They are continuing to make the generalization of the art and the chance to get back on the valuable city.
